US Republicans foil attempt to repeal Trump’s energy emergency powers
By a vote of 47-51, the resolution introduced by Senators Tim Kaine and Martin Heinrich failed to pass, with Senators Ted Cruz and Tim Sheehy abstaining. The resolution sought to terminate the emergency declaration that Trump had issued regarding energy. A similar effort was also blocked by Senate Republicans in February.
"For the second time, Senate Republicans blocked our legislation that would have repealed President Trump’s bogus energy emergency,” Kaine said. “Because Republicans refuse to stand up to Trump, Americans will continue to see energy prices go up, clean energy projects across the country canceled, and good-paying manufacturing jobs lost.”
Heinrich criticized the policy, arguing that by cutting energy sources instead of expanding them, the administration under Trump drove up costs and forced families to make difficult choices between paying for energy or other essential needs. “Because Republicans refuse to stand up to Trump, Americans will continue to see energy prices go up, clean energy projects across the country canceled, and good-paying manufacturing jobs lost,” he said.
After taking office in January, Trump signed an executive order granting his administration expanded powers to promote fossil fuels, bypass key environmental regulations, and obstruct clean energy initiatives.
