Fidan Says Turkey Determined to Stay Out of Escalating Regional Tensions
Speaking at a joint press briefing in Ankara alongside his Bangladeshi counterpart Khalilur Rahman, Fidan stressed that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made Türkiye’s stance clear and reiterated the nation’s opposition to participation in what he described as an unjust war.
"Türkiye will resist all kinds of provocations. Our president’s determination on this issue is clear. Türkiye does not want to take part in this ongoing unjust war, and we are absolutely against being dragged into it. We also have a firm determination not to fall for provocations," Fidan said.
Fidan emphasized that while Türkiye possesses significant deterrence and military strength, urgent diplomatic efforts are necessary to prevent further escalation.
"Türkiye’s deterrence and military capabilities are extremely high. When we think strategically and wisely, we always have ideas about when and where this power should be used. But at this stage, diplomacy must urgently be activated," he said.
Referring to rising regional tensions following coordinated Israeli and US strikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent retaliatory actions, the foreign minister noted that Türkiye is closely monitoring developments and remains committed to avoiding further escalation.
The conflict has intensified since joint attacks by Israel and the US on Feb. 28 reportedly killed around 1,200 people in Iran, including the country’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, as well as Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states hosting US military installations.
